Preview: An in-depth study of the fruits of the spirit. This is the first part of a thirteen-part series of lessons on this subject.

Scripture Reading: Psalm 1:1-3.

Memory Verse: John 7:38.

1. Discuss the comparison of a tree planted near the water with a person who puts his trust in the Lord according to the foregoing Scriptures.
2. Will one endure when troubles come if one truly has trust in the Lord? Jeremiah 17:7-8.
3. What happens when one is not truly planted in the Lord? Jeremiah 17:5-6.
4. Why is this true? Jeremiah 17:9-11, Matthew 13:5 & Matthew 13:20-21.
Note: What a contrast there is between the man who is firmly planted in Christ, and he who puts his trust in man or his own ability. Only those who are connected to the family tree of God can bear spiritual fruit.
5. How did Jesus explain our connection to God’s family tree? John 15:4-9.
6. What is the primary fruit of this tree? John 15:10-17.
Note: Before we can grow and produce spiritual fruit we must first be connected to the tree. Only God can make that attachment, but when He calls us to repentance, only we can make that choice. Love is the primary fruit that produces all of the other spiritual fruit. We love God because He first loved us. We prove our love for Him by our love for our fellowman and our obedience to His Commandments.
7. Will all who are chosen answer the call? Proverbs 1:22-26 & Matthew 22:14.
8. How can we know for sure that we are abiding in Him? I John 4:7-11, I John 5:1-3 & I John 4:11-13.
9. Can gossipers, fault-finders, and trouble makers bear spiritual fruit? James 3:16-18.
10. Can we stay attached to God’s family tree without having a spirit of enduring patience? James 5:7-11 & Ephesians 6:13-14.
Note: As we go into an in depth study of the fruit of the spirit let’s observe how each fruit blends into and supports the other fruit. It is difficult at times to distinguish one from the other because all grow on the same family tree, which is constantly watered by God’s Holy Spirit.
