Preview: Forsaking Jesus is denying yourself life eternal with Him. This lesson demonstrates times where people denied Christ to their own detriment. A true Christian will put God above every worldly thing, including his own life.

Scripture Reading: Mark 10:17-31.

Memory Verse Matthew 26:74.

1. What did Peter say when Jesus told of His imminent departure? Matthew 26:33 & Matthew 26:35.
2. Who knew Peter’s heart better than Peter did? Matthew 26:34.
3. Who else was to deny and forsake Jesus? Matthew 26:56.
4. How did Peter react when it was time for him to prove his loyalty to Christ? Matthew 26:69-74.
5. What did he do when Peter remembered the words of Jesus? Matthew 26:75.
Note: Many people today are like Peter. He loved Jesus and said he would be willing to die with Him, but when the true test of Peter’s love for Christ came, he denied Him. Many say they love Christ and will follow Him, but when the temptations and trials come, and the road gets rough, they deny Christ.
6. What did Christ tell of those who deny Him in time of temptation? Matthew 13:5-6 & Matthew 13:20-21.
7. For what other things do we find people forsaking Jesus? Luke 8:14.
8. Who will we deny if we truly love Jesus? Matthew 16:24.
9. What will we be able to do when self is denied? Matthew 16:25.
Note: When self is crucified, Christ will live in our lives richly. Peter didn’t fully deny self, and thus he failed when the test came. Those who have fully denied self will be willing to live their lives for the brethren and for the cause of Christ and right, as Stephen, Paul, and others did.
